We went to see the movie Friday night, and as far superhero origin movies go, Wonder Woman exceeded my expectations (sad to admit, they weren’t very high). I thought it would be a Zack Snyder-esque, pretty-colour-boom-boom film, but there was actually character development (!). The fact that it was one of the few superhero movies that flew through the Bechdel test was a big plus as well.
I mean, it should better pass the test, considering the movie features a female protagonist.
Also, because Gal Gadot is charming and hilarious and I have a girl crush on her (she started law school! she was in the military for two years! AND mostly importantly, she’s grounded! at least for now) and Chris Pine didn’t jump on the Centipede Abs™ wagon that other people, ie. the other Chris — Chris Pratt — did. (I miss Andy Dwyer from Parks and Rec.) Can I also mention that the romance wasn’t thrown in my face? There was a distinct, refreshing lack of instalove.
So in short: Gal Gadot is a hard-working badass, Chris Pine has not converted to the dark side, and we finally have a thoughtful, major superhero movie helmed by a female director.
It was a good weekend.
Here’s the drawing:
I also have to share with you guys the in-progress screen caps, because they’re really funny. Gal Gadot started off looking like a The-Joker-Russian nesting doll.
