Fall, I AM READY FOR YOU. As soon as September arrived, cold-ish weather also tumbled in and now I can enjoy bowls of hot polenta without feeling judged. Or wear my fuzzy socks at home. I’m not sure how sustainable this cold front is, as apparently the weather will be humid and hot this Wednesday. We’ll see.
I also travelled home to Vancouver for a very short week, and inadvertently disconnected from the real world for the entire duration. I never would have thought I’d miss Canadian spelling, out of all things, but I felt so strangely satisfied as I saw words like Harbourview tacked on the sides of a building. Once, in a peer-reviewed writing assignment for one of my classes a couple of years ago, I used “signalled,” and a classmate wrote in fat letters along the margin, “IT’S ONE ‘L’ ONLY!! SPELLING” and I had to fight the urge to retaliate on his paper with “U IGNORAMUS DO U EVEN KNO HOW 2 SPELL.” He would always eat Cliff bars and I would hear the crunch of the wrapper throughout the entire class, as he’d nibble on it. Extremely slowly. Over an hour.
It was a fifteen person class.
Anyway, as my last year of college arrives, here are 5 anecdotes that I think are worth sharing, against my better judgement:
- I’m always cold. Even in the summer (especially in the summer, because there’s AC). True story: The Boy and I went on a museum hop one summer in DC and in the Aerospace museum, there was a heat sensor that showed where the warmest parts of the body were. We stood in front of the screen, along with a handful of other eager visitors, and I guess it was calibrated so that normal body temperature would show as neutral, because I had negative temperature. The warmest part of my body was my face. The other visitors were just as shocked as I was, and someone took a picture of the screen. As did The Boy, where the picture is now hidden with a score of other gems of photos, such as me in half-sneeze.
- The second time I visited home during college, I missed sushi so much that I ate it almost every day. My mother was slightly affronted, as she took it to mean that I no longer enjoyed her food anymore. *No, mom, your cooking is wonderful. I just really, really, missed sushi.
- There is a corner of my apartment that I bump into regularly, and I always end up apologizing to it, even though I’m the one who ends up with a bruise.
- When my old backpack deteriorated beyond recognition, I bought a military-grade backpack in retaliation. It, however, came with a US patch, so in defiance, I also bought a Canadian flag patch and slapped it on instead. The downside is that, because my backpack is bright red and half my size, all my friends have been able to easily spot me on campus.
- I have a plant called Oatmeal. I love it to death. Literally, as it almost died via outdoor soil bug infestation from a peppermint plant.
I also managed to A) not only watch a complete TV show but also B) watch it in TWO DAYS and that show was Stranger Things. I’m quite proud of myself that I was able to sit for eight hours without squirming. It’s actually quite a heartwarming show and I can say that I finally understand the obsession over Eleven/Millie Bobby Brown because she is so cute and tiny and such a brilliant actress and only 13 years old and did I mention how cute she is? O
