We have snow! Actual snow and not slush. This may be the first time in years (five? six?) that I’ve seen a white Christmas in Vancouver. My sister has been neck-deep (actually, eyeballs deep — her words) in college applications, which means I’m currently her editor, moral support, and sometimes water bearer. Because, apparently, people stressed over college applications get so salty over word counts that they need water, STAT.
Every evening at approximately 9pm, our conversations go like this:
Sister: What’s another word for ___?
Me: What’s the sentence?
Sister: Is it okay if I say this?
Me: Just say the sentence.
Sister: But can I just use –
Me: SENTENCE.
(five minutes later)
Me: Where are you now?
Sister: I’m working on (this college).
Me: Oh really? BECAUSE THAT CLEARLY IS A BUZZFEED ARTICLE.
My sister is the kind of person that needs someone holding a flame to her bottom while cracking a whip, otherwise nothing gets done. I don’t even like Buzzfeed quizzes, she says, as she clicks through “What Age Are You From Your Dessert Choices” — like, do you want another algorithm telling you that you’re a 50 year old man? Watching her agonize of her applications really takes me back to the similarly harrowing, teeth-pulling experience of essay-writing and refining and more writing and more refining. I can’t say I’ve missed this experience.
But now, let us talk Star Wars, because I saw it last week, immediately after my Genetics final and it’s probably one of my favorite Star Wars movies. Rian Johnson, you are one crafty little mofo. Apparently people were either loving or freaked out about the Porgs, which had to exist because of the puffins on the island. I found them fairly adorable, in a Neopets/Furby kind of way — Furbies are definitely much creepier, especially when you accidentally trip over one in the middle of the night and it starts its demonic jingle and it won’t shut up and you have no idea where it is and is the emotional equivalent of stepping on Lego. Ever since the movie, I’ve been Super Inspired™ about drawing fascinating scenes (even though spoiler alert!: the Forcebook angsty cave scene has been rendered about a million times. And can we talk about the absolutely beautiful shot of the hyperspace jump??). I also plan on watching Ocean 8, because J told me to, and not the horror movie that L did, because I cannot Horror Movie. (Sorry, L.) Not to mention, I usually am involuntarily inclined to cut off any arm circulation to the person next to me. (Which usually falls on the SO. See?? You don’t even need massage therapy because I AM IT.)
Anyway. Here’s a sketch of my sister poring over these essays. Star Wars sketch/drawing dump is coming soon. May the Force be with y’all.
