It’s this time every four years that I feel aggressively Canadian and obsess over curling, hockey, and figure skating at the same time. Maple leaves drawn in all the places. Red and white everywhere. Canadian ALL THE THINGS.
Tired? Watch the Olympics. See your Canadian friend on campus? Stop and talk about how amazing Canada is and high-five over the latest medal. Patrick Chan finally got his gold medal? Cry happy tears and shout the news to everyone you know. Have work to do? Do it WITH THE OLYMPICS.
Don’t forget to sing the national anthem.
Last night was the pairs figure skating finale, which means it was Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir’s last Olympics dance, ever. My sister and I have been Virtue and Moir fans since 2009, ever since I’d painted a giant portrait of Tessa for an art class assignment. (Literally, it was by chance that I’d chosen to draw Tessa, a point-and-click after scrolling through the list of Olympic athletes, only because I was fascinated by her name.) And then I fell into the rabbit hole and never looked back.
Also, the fact that the internet is also now obsessed with them is hilarious. Yes, we all want them to fall in love and have beautiful ice babies together.
